Title: Quarkonia Physics with ALICE Muon Spectrometer

Abstract: ALICE is the only LHC experiment dedicated to the study of Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) Which is expected to be created in heavy-ion collisions. Among the most promising observables, Heavy quarkonia provide an essential probe for the characterization of the QGP thanks to their sensitivity to the earlist and hottest stages of the collision. Quarkonia measurement can be Performed in the dimuon decay channel with the ALICE muon spectrometer in the forward rapidity region.

The ALICE muon spectrometer consists of 5 tracking and 2 trigger stations, a set of absorbers and a dipole magnet. It has been commissioned by means of cosmic rays and the first LHC beam injections in 2008 and has shown good performances for muon detection. ALICE has collected data in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at Sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV, respectively. J/psi measurement has been successfully performed in both pp and Pb-Pb collisions.

In addition, the upsilon signal has been observed in pp collisions. In the presentation, the design consideration and performances of the ALICE muon spectrometer are discussed in view of the measurement of heavy quarkonia.
